With Quick Swipe Comping different takes are stored as part of a Take Folder, with the top layer or comp, in other words formed by swiping between the different takes. When it comes to multi-track recording, therefore, Track Alternatives make much more sense than Quick Swipe Comping. Each separate take becomes its own Track Alternative. Record take 1 therefore, and then create a New Track Alternative, recording your second pass into the newly emptied track lane.

The Track Grouping feature is most commonly used for mixing, whereby a number of different mixer channel strips are locked together as part of the same fader group.

Push one fader up, therefore, and the other faders in the same group will be lifted by the same amount. As well as dealing with fader levels, though, Groups can also be locked together so that editing decisions — like trimming a region or applying crossfades — are performed en-masse.

Rather than having to replicate an edit across multiple tracks therefore, all you need to do is edit one of the regions assigned to the Group.

Duplicate makes a complete copy of the current track, now called Alternative B. Alternative A is left as it is.

Grouped edits are activated by the Group Setting dialogue box, which also includes an option to activate Track Alternatives for grouped tracks. Once the grouping is activated, all Track Alternative functions are applied simultaneously to all the tracks in the group. Used to select similar tracks and regions. For example, tracks of the same color. They will appear in the upper part of your arrangement window , as shown in the picture, and can be quickly accessed via the following key commands :.

You can also move your markers around. These key commands can be used to alter MIDI regions rapidly, on the piano roll and on the main window. Sometimes creating your own custom key commands or changing existing ones is better for your workflow. The process is pretty simple. There, you will find a list of all the key commands available inside Logic Pro. You can also use the Search tool on the upper right to find your desired command, as well as sort them by Used , Unused , etc. On the section at the right of the window, you can change the key command for triggering each function , as well as change touch bar settings if your Mac has one and assign MIDI controls using the Learn New Assignment button.

There, you have the option to either accept it but with exceptions on how you can use it, as you can see in the image , replace it, or cancel the change. Because all of the tracks are grouped, Logic creates a copy of the playlist on each track, effectively copying the entire arrangement, and assigns this to Track Alternative B. You can now make dramatic changes to your arrangement knowing that you can always return back to Track Alternative A, should you wish to. Experiment with deleting regions, copying regions and muting regions to create a totally different arrangement. Now when you switch the Track Alternative back to A you should get your original arrangement back to compare with your new arrangement.

If you want to create more alternative arrangements simply go back to Track Alternative A and once again use the duplicate option. Screen 3: All the tracks in my arrangement are grouped by Track Alternative. Here we see the arrangement when all tracks are set to Track Alternative A. Now that you have created a series of different arrangements there may be individual tracks you wish to commit to the timeline, making them a permanent feature, unaffected by switches between Track Alternatives.

Fixing a track in place is as simple as taking it out of the editing group. You can continue to compare and change your different arrangement ideas in the other tracks, and cycle through Track Alternatives A, B and C as before, safe in the knowledge that changing Track Alternatives in grouped tracks will only affect the tracks within that group.

Screen 4: I have duplicated the arrangement in Screen 3 to Track Alternative B and then made a range of changes including deleting, moving and recording regions. I can now switch between the arrangement in Screen 3 and the one in Screen 4 using the Track Alternative drop-down on any track.

Because all tracks are grouped, all the playlists will switch simultaneously. Track Alternatives can be used to great effect when collaborating with other musicians. For example, if you have a composition that you want to let someone else work on, you can assign all of the tracks to Track Alternatives, then duplicate the entire arrangement to Track Alternative B and then give your collaborator the freedom to change any aspect of the arrangement.

This is great fun knowing that you can easily return any element in the arrange window back to how you had it before by switching that track to Track Alternative A. Just bear in mind that Track Alternatives do not save Channel Strip settings and any track-based automation will affect all Track Alternatives.

Region-based automation, on the other hand, is saved per alternative. One of the things that can make collaboration difficult is the tension between wanting to experiment more but not wanting to let go of the ideas that occurred early on in a session. Track Alternatives really helps free up those administrative worries so you can focus on being creative.

To copy regions from the original to the duplicate track, Option-drag them I do everything on Logic Pro X. It even makes me coffee. Start free trial. With either a project package or folder, you can choose to copy audio files and other assets in the project or reference them in another location. Saving assets. To check that I'm copying correctly, I can copy the section in Project B and paste it into a free Track on Project B and it plays perfectly.

I'm sure there's a way, just can't find it. In a project, how can I copy a track, so I can change the instrument on one of them and then pan.
